IJNDB - Student Technology and Associated Technology Services Usage

The Falmouth School Department’s computers/devices, networks, and internet services are provided to support the educational mission of the school department. They are intended to enhance the curriculum and learning opportunities for the students of the school district. This policy, in addition to the rules established in policy IJNDB-R, also apply to devices issued directly to students, whether in use at school or off school premises. For the purpose of this policy, the term device includes, but is not limited to, computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Student use of department owned devices, privately owned devices while on campus, school networks, and/or the school department’s internet services is a privilege, not a right. Compliance with the school department’s policies and rules concerning student usage of technology on campus, department owned devices, usage of school networks, and/or the department’s internet services is mandatory. Students who violate these policies and rules may have their technology privileges limited, suspended or revoked. Such violations may also result in additional disciplinary actions, referral to law enforcement, and/or legal action. Student usage of department owned devices, school networks and/or the school department’s internet services remain under the control and supervision of the school department at all times. In addition, students shall have no expectation of privacy in their use of school owned devices, networks, or internet services. Students shall also have no expectation of privacy in their use of privately owned devices while on school grounds.

The Falmouth School Department utilizes filtering technology designed to block materials that are obscene or harmful to minors and child pornography. The Falmouth School Department takes precautions to supervise student use of the internet, but parents should be aware that the Falmouth School Department cannot reasonably prevent all instances of inappropriate technology use by students in violation of this or any other relevant policies or rules, including access to objectionable materials and communication with persons outside of the school department. The school department is not responsible for the accuracy or quality of information that students obtain through the internet.

Students and parents shall be informed of this policy and the accompanying rules through handbooks, the school department’s website, and/or other means selected by the Superintendent of Schools, along with requiring a signature indicating understanding and an agreement of compliance.

The superintendent is responsible for implementing this policy and the accompanying rules established in policy IJNDB-R. Additional administrative procedures, department or building rules governing the day-to-day management and operations of the school department’s technology systems may be implemented as long as they are consistent with this and any other relevant policies or rules. The Superintendent may delegate specific responsibilities to the district’s Technology Coordinator and others as he/she deems appropriate.
