High School Science - Use of Online Pedagogica Software

The biology, chemistry and physics teachers have been participating in a 3 year study run by the Concord Consortium, looking to see if model based computer programs can help in the development of scientific concepts in different areas.  In genetics, students "build" dragons, in chemistry they manipulate atoms and learn the gas laws, and in physics they attend to different topics in mechanics.  The programs run on the laptops, in the computer labs and in the library, and students can either work on them in some classes, or do the activities independently.  The programs allow the teacher to check on student understanding and the teacher can look to see how each student answered a particular question.
Due to the high level of participation of our teachers and the willingness of our students to serve as focus group participants, (in exchange for pizza), our school has become a valued resource to the Consortium, and they continue to explore ways to build on the relationship that has been established.  In addition, without Trey, this project could never have gotten off the ground.  There are a multitude of issues that crop up when trying to do a large-scale implementation of cutting/bleeding edge technology and he has managed all of them.  The program this year has run very smoothly, and the activities are embedded into the curriculum now, and will be available to us in the future, even though the funding for the research project has ended.
