Workshop Meeting
Monday, June 5, 2006

1.         The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Falmouth High School ATM room.  Present were Chairman Beppie Cerf, Linda Cote, Karen Farber, Beth Franklin, Mark Terison, Superintendent George Entwistle, and approximately 10 others (Lydick out).

2.         Student Presentation:  High School student John Pelletier spoke about case studies involving the EMT calls he has been involved in and the follow-ups on those calls.  He conducted these investigations and researched cases as part of a Project Explore at Falmouth High School.  His participation in the EMT Program has been a great learning experience and this field has become a passion for him that he plans to pursue in his post graduate years.   

3.         Transition Planning Throughout the District:  Mrs. Powers explained the planning involved in school transitions in the areas of curriculum, school culture, identification of specific student needs and information sharing for both students and their parents.  Mr. Njaa, science teacher at Falmouth High School, provided an example of curriculum review.  Mr. Flaherty and Mrs. Boffa informed the Board about the efforts of Lunt and Plummer-Motz staff with grade 2-3 meetings, Student Assistance Teams and Special Education staff assistance, parent orientation, as well as step-up activities and cross-building visits.

            Mrs. Boffa and Mr. Rodman then explained transition activities for grade 4 to 5 including staff meetings, Student Assistance Teams, Gifted & Talented and Special Education staff assistance, parent orientation, and step-up activities and cross-building visits.

            Mr. Rodman, Mrs. Hutton, and Ms. Palfrey provided information on the transition activities from the Middle School to the High School.  This included presentations by the Guidance Department and the Grade 9 Team, an explanation of the role of the Student-Centered Team, parent orientation, and step-up activities and High School tours for students.

            Mrs. Powers explained other transition interventions; the role of the Summer Academy, new students, cumulative records, portfolios, and PowerSchool data.

4.         Adjournment:  Ms. Franklin with a second from Mrs. Farber moved the Board adjourn.  The motion passed 4-0 (Cerf and Hillman-Reed left early) and the meeting adjourned at 8:17 p.m.
