SCHOOL BUDGET VOTE

Tuesday, May 6th at Falmouth High School

For the first time, Falmouth voters will have the opportunity to vote on the school budget. The 2008-2009 budget was recently endorsed by the Town Council and the School Board.  It represents a 3.5% expenditure increase over last year, despite rising fuel prices and an inflation rate of 4.1%. The mil rate (used to calculate taxes) will increase a modest 0.38%.  For a house assessed at $300,000 this means a property tax impact of $12.33 for the year.

It is crucial that voters get to the polls on Tuesday, May 6th.  Polls will be open at Falmouth High School from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

There will be one question on the ballot and it will read:

Do you favor approving the Town of Falmouth school budget for the upcoming school year that was adopted at the Town Council meeting held April 28, 2008 and that includes locally raised funds that exceed the required local contribution as described in the Essential Programs and Services Funding Act?

A YES vote allows additional funds to be raised for K-12 public
education.
A NO vote means additional funds cannot be raised for K-12 public
education.

A "yes" vote will indicate approval of the $25,131,514 budget.

A "no" vote will force the entire budget to be sent back to the School Board for revision and then to the Town Council for approval before being brought back to the voters again at the June 10th municipal election.

Please refer to the Spring edition of the Portal publication (sent to all residences in Falmouth) for additional information about the budget.  Copies are available in the Superintendent’s Office.

Thank you for taking advantage of this important new voter responsibility.
