Astronomy Club

The function of this club is to provide students with the opportunity to experience some of the wonders of the Cosmos in a first-hand, hands-on way.  Club activities include celestial observation, field trips and in-school meetings.  Presently, the club has the use of one 17-inch, one 10-inch, and three 6-inch Newtonian reflecting telescopes. Astrophotography is also possible, integrating the school's dark room facilities.  Participation is not limited to members, and it is common to see parents and other community members at monthly "Star Parties" held at Falmouth Community Park as well as other locations in the greater Portland area.
Meets Mondays after school, room 221.  Advisor: Mr. Glick: gglick@fps.k12.me.us

Big Buddies

Individuals involved with this program will be mentoring a student in the elementary or middle schools.  This is an opportunity for someone who has some free time to support a young person and be a positive influence in his/her life.  Activities range between, reading, helping with home work, art related activities, music, Maze Craze, sports, board games, puzzles etc.  The commitment is 30 minutes a week.
Adviser: Ms. Haley:   rhaley@fps.k12.me.us

Adviser: Mr. Williamson:   twilliamson@fps.k12.me.us

Class Executive Boards

Each grade (9-12) has a Class Executive Board, which is composed of class officers: president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.  Class executive boards represent students in each individual class.  They conduct class business in the form of class meetings and raise money for the class toward graduation.

  DAGS

Drug Awareness Group of Students.  This program involves teaching a prevention curriculum to elementary school students.  Students spend a day in training in order to learn about drug prevention.  After the training students work together in pairs and teach 4-6 lessons in an assigned classroom.  Lessons are between 30 minutes and an hour.  Some of the lessons include refusal skills, listening skills, communication, and drug resistance education.  Adviser: Ms Haley:  rhaley@fps.k12.me.us

Debate & Student Congress

Students attend practice once a week to research; discuss/debate the current topic; and, learn and practice cross examination questions, rebuttal speeches and public speaking. We are part of the Maine Forensic Association (MFA), a group composed of Maine schools that organizes and sponsors events. From October to January, different schools host Saturday tournaments, which culminate in a State Tournament sponsored by the Maine Principal's Association. Falmouth is also a member of the National Forensic League (NFL), which holds regional qualifiers and the National Tournament in June.  At tournaments, Falmouth competes in Student Congress.  Students participate in a simulated Congress where they draft, debate and attempt to pass their bill.  Adviser:  Mr. Spring:    gspring@fps.k12.me.us

Environmental Action Committee

In the late 1990's, the Falmouth High School Recycling Committee evolved into an Environmental Action Committee in response to student interest and commitment to having a wider, positive impact on their school, community, and planet. Though the EAC still coordinates the collection and processing of the school's recyclables and returnables, our mission has expanded, especially into efforts to reduce the school's and community's carbon footprint. In recent months, committee members gained a heightened awareness of local efforts to have the Town of Falmouth join the Cool Cities initiative, and strongly expressed a desire to contribute to the cause. The committee decided to petition the greater student body so as to:
1) raise awareness among the student body of environmental issues and concerns,
2) empower students to be contributors to the decision making processes in their community,
3) raise awareness within the community of the concerns of its youth with regards to the condition of the planet that they are inheriting.
The committee looks forward to further assisting Cool Falmouth in their efforts to make their community and ultimately our planet a more habitable place.  Adviser: Mr. Glick:   gglick@fps.k12.me.us

Falmouth Singers

Falmouth Singers, Falmouth Four Master Class, Women's Chorus, and Men's Chorus
All of these vocal groups are smaller ensembles consisting of members of the larger high school Concert Choir.  Each small group will perform a minimum of two formal concerts per year, and in addition, might perform run-out concerts in the community and/or perform in a statewide competition.  Participation in Falmouth Singers is by interview or audition only.  All of the other ensembles are participation by interview and permission of the instructor, in addition to being a member of Concert Choir.  All ensembles will meet outside the school day, most likely before school.  After successful completion in any of these ensembles, students will earn 1/4 credit.  Students may participate in more than one co-curricular vocal ensemble.
Additional information for Falmouth Four:  Students who are not members of Concert Choir wishing to participate in the Falmouth Four Master Class may do so, and with successful completion of the course will receive 1/4 credit, but they may not perform in the two formal concerts. Participation in this ensemble requires forming a quartet of Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass, or all women, or all men, and being willing to perform in front of the class, including fundamental vocal improvisation.
Advisor:  Ms. Northrup   wnorthrup@fps.k12.me.us

  Gay/Straight Alliance

The members of the Falmouth High School Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) are interested in helping to educate the school community about homophobia. The goal of this group is to establish an environment where everyone, including gay, bisexual, or transgender, is respected regardless of their sexual orientation. We have interesting conversations in a social atmosphere, and privacy is respected.
Advisor: Ms. Boston   aboston@fps.k12.me.us

Key Club

Key Club is an international, student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform service, build character, and develop leadership.  Key Club members work on projects to help the community and support the club's parent organization, Kiwanis.  Previous events this club has volunteered at and/or participated in are: the Ronald McDonald House, Strive, Strides Against Breast Cancer and many locally based events such as the Fall and Spring Cleanup at the Falmouth Public Library, and the December and Spring Fairs at Lunt/Plummer Motz schools.   Key Club members have learned that their organization is built around the concept of caring.

The Mast

"The Mast" is the school newspaper and is produced and distributed a number of times throughout the year. Students learn skills in writing and editing, as well as the design and production of a newspaper. Editors are elected each year. The Mast provides the valuable service of keeping students informed about those things going on around their school.  Adviser: Mr. Casey: mcasey@fps.k12.me.us

Math Team

Many Falmouth graduates have reflected on their Math Team experience as being one of the most valuable things they did while in high school.   If you are a strong math student and you enjoy problem solving, you now have a chance to enjoy the same benefits that those former team members recall as being special to them; benefits such as: being better prepared for College Admissions Tests and for future college courses, camaraderie with teammates at meets and practices, potential for recognition of your academic excellence, and the satisfaction that comes from solving challenging problems. Meets Wednesdays during lunch.  Adviser:  Mr. Inlow:   minlow@fps.k12.me.us

Mock Trial

The Mock Trial Team is a debate-oriented club that participates in State Mock Trial competition from October to December.  The Mock Trial Team is comprised of students, who are assisted by an advisor and professional attorney in the research and presentation of a fictional court case.  Students compete against other high schools beginning in mid-October, presenting their case to a judge and two evaluators.  Winning teams advance to subsequent rounds.  Adviser:  Ms. Nelson:   snelson@fps.k12.me.us

Model UN

The Model UN Team meets on Monday nights, beginning in January, to prepare to role-play as United Nations delegates in Model UN Conferences.  Activities may include a three-day conference in Boston, with over one thousand other students from around the country and the world, and a three-day Conference at the USM Gorham campus. Conference awards are given for outstanding performances.  In the weekly meetings, Team members practice public speaking, negotiating, and parliamentary procedure, and research the countries they will represent as UN delegates and their assigned international issues and draft position papers and resolutions.

Natural Helpers

This program is part of the school's efforts to create an environment where all students feel they have somewhere to turn when they are struggling with a problem or just need someone to talk to.  It is based on the awareness that teens often talk to other teens before they go to adults.  Students are selected by their peers for this program.  A survey is distributed to freshman during the first two weeks of school.  The individuals that are involved with this program, attend a 2 1/2 day retreat in order to develop better listening and communication skills.  They also learn about "Red Flag" issues as well as community resources that are available to students.
Adviser:   Ms. Haley:     rhaley@fps.k12.me.us

Outing Club

This club provides opportunities for students to explore outdoor pursuits, such as hiking, snowshoeing, paddling, and rock climbing. Members meet about once a month to plan outings, which generally occur on Saturdays.  Students choose which outings to participate in, and slots are filled on a first come-first served basis.
Adviser(s): Ms. Stacey:   sstacey@fps.k12.me.us  or Mr. Moore:   cmoore@fps.k12.me.us

Prom Committee
The Prom Committee is made up of juniors who plan their prom for that year. It is the responsibility of the committee to choose a theme, location, invitations, food and music for the prom. They also sell tickets and design and construct the decorations for the dance. Each year, the executive board of the Junior class decides how they want to choose the Prom Committee. Volunteers are always welcome.

The Robotics Team

The first robotics competition is an exciting, nationwide competition that teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. The program is a challenging experience—and a lot of fun. The competitions are high-tech spectator sporting events, the result of lots of focused brainstorming, real-world teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project timelines, and deadlines.
Organizational meeting will be held in late September.   Adviser: Mr. Kraljic:     jkraljic@fps.k12.me.us

Science Bowl
Science Bowl is a fast paced competition where teams of students compete in tournaments against other schools.  Schools go head to head answering questions and must buzz in faster than their opponents in order to gain the chance to answer the questions and build up points.  Questions come from all areas of science, and students must be quick, hold a lot of knowledge, be willing to trust themselves and their team mates, and have fun.  We practice once a week starting in October, for the state competition in late February.  The teams will also compete in the Ocean Sciences Bowl in February and will scrimmage with other schools for fun.  Winning schools continue on to National competitions held in May.

Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a chance for students to compete against other students and schools in over 20 different events.  This year events include Sumo Bots, Mousetrap Vehicles, Towers, Forensic Science, Ornithology, Mission Possible, Ecology, Disease Detectives, Wind Power, and more.  Whatever your interest, there is likely an event that fits.  Teams have up to 15 students and we usually field two teams.  Students typically work with a friend on an event, and will need to take on at least 3 to 5 different events for the day of the competition.  We meet in November and December to begin and organize and then weekly through February.  As the competition approaches the first week in April, we meet more often and long hours are put in to meet the deadline.  We may be able to hold scrimmages in some events with other schools in the weeks leading up to the Olympiad.  In the end, the events are challenging, the day is long, and lots of fun is had.

Student Council

The Student Council meets regularly and is composed of four elected members from each class. The Council elects its own officers.  The Student Council acts as the formal student-led governing body of the school.  It discusses and presents proposals on important school topics.  It governs class and student activities in order to avoid conflicts in scheduling.  The Council is involved in many community endeavors such as running blood drives, helping the needy at seasonal times, contributing to the Falmouth Scholarship Fund, cleaning the Ronald McDonald House, working on Habitat for Humanity projects, and similar such projects.  It is a member of the Maine and national affiliation of Student Councils, but focuses most of its efforts in the school and community.    Adviser:  Mr. McCully:      rmccully@fps.k12.me.us

Student Rescue

Any student may join Student Rescue but in order to participate fully, students take an off-site course and tests to become a Maine-licensed EMT-Basic.  They then apply for membership to the Falmouth Fire-EMS Department.  Upon successfully completing those two steps, if they maintain good grades and superlative relations with their teachers, they may respond to ambulance calls from the high school during the school day according to a schedule.  Student Rescue meets as a group once a week.  Adviser:  Mr. Williamson:  twilliamson@fps.k12.me.us

Theater Company

The Theater Company at Falmouth High School is a co-curricular activity open to all high school students interested in one or more aspects of theater. There are opportunities for acting, dancing and singing for carpenters, lighters, scenic artists, costumers, wardrobe and make-up.  Students can choose to  be involved in any or all of the 4 to 5 productions  each season which include  straight theater, musical theater, children's theater and competitive theater. The Company has been a vital part of the school community for over 20 years and we welcome all interested studen
