Dealing with Dyslexia: The Power of High Expectations

Gaston Caperton
Two time Governor, West Virginia
President College Board

Caperton was absolutely terrific. He has dyslexia and struggled to learn to read. His father worked with him on phonemes until he learned to read. It was lots of work and countless hours to learn. He still struggles as evidenced by his presentation, but he had a great sense of humor. He mentioned Yeats, Governor Kean (the Governor who headed up the 911 commission), Tom Cruise Whoppi Goldberg, Nelson Rockefeller and others with learning disabilities who have succeeded.

Impact: A great model to share with kids. The theme of High Expectations carried throughout the conference. Caperton is now the head of the college boards. He commented, with a slight laugh, that the college board hiring committee, must not have looked at HIS SAT scores when the offered him the job!
