WEDNESDAY January 8, 2003

Attendees: Harriet Boomer, Eydie Pryzant, Kathy Hedman, Rena Becker, Karen Farber, Christine Dalzell, Maria Locke, Carol Keroack, Nancy Miller, Melisaa Cott, Ro Cox-Collins, Deb Loveitt, Kathie Girard, and Nancy Richards.

The meeting was called to order by Melissa Cott and Rosmary Cox-Collins.

We began the meeting with a presentation from Peggy Becksvoort on the EBSCO Data Base system. This system is a wealth of information with thousand of magazine articles, book reviews, info on authors, research on just about anything you could think of, just to mention a few things and it is absolutely free to anyone with internet access. If you are interested and would like more info contact Peggy at the Middle School Library during regular school hours. She will be more than happy to give you a hand on demonstration.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Deb Loveitt reported that everything is going well with the return after the holidays. Then she fielded questions.

1. How do kids get notified when they leave something at home, that it has been dropped off in the office? Ans. It is very difficult because the school will not interrupt classes. So if your child has forgotten something from home, as soon as they realize it they should check with the office.
2. There were two dates listed for District 2, one in Principals notes and one on the school calendar. Which is the correct one? Ans. . Jerry Berry gives us the info for the notes and he should know the dates. There was some discussion that there were two dates because one was for 7th – 8th grade and one for 5th – 6th. Deb will check with Jerry and post it in principal’s notes.
3. What about the 5th –6th grade math team? Ans. They are still looking for a coach for the team. No one has come forward yet. There is a very small stypen being paid, if you know of anyone contact the school.
4. Why are the report cards given to the kids to bring home? Ans. This is the way the school has always handled report cards. They will look into ways of letting parents know they are coming. Possibly a notice in the principals notes, or listing it on the calendar so parents can be on the look out for them. Is it possible to mail them home?

NUTRITION COMMITTEE

The nutrition committee would like to look into the possibility of getting parents to volunteer to come in at lunchtime and help the kids with things like lost lunch money, or finding a seat. Some discussion came up about kids wanting to sit with their friends only and the comfort level of sitting with someone you don’t know that well. Deb Loveitt talked about “mix it up day.” This is a day when a select group will come in and sit with other people they normally don’t and try to get them to reach out and include others. It will happen one day for the 7th grade and then a synopsis of its success will led into the 8th grade day. We hope this will be an on going occurrence to encourage kids to reach out and make everyone feel welcome.

The committee is also planning on sending a survey to the current 5th grade parents about the lunch menus. At the current time for fifth grade we are following the Plummer Motz lunch menu. This means that the lunch room must set up for one class that buys a-la-cart and then tear it down for the fifth grade’s lunch time and then after they leave tear it down for the other classes to come in. We are hoping to get it to a uniform lunch method so the lunch aides can concentrate on getting the kids fed.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The treasurer’s report was accepted, we have $32,662.67 in the checking account and grant requests are starting to come in.

RECESS COMMITTEE:

The committee has broken into two categories, short-term goals and long term goals.

Short term they want to add more four square courts. This will have to wait till the snows melt. They also are looking into benches or picnic tables where kids can sit and talk. Long term is still looking into playground equipment and where and how it can be put in.

HANNAFOR HELPS SCHOOLS

There was $246 collected at the school from 29 families. We are not sure what may come from the store itself as Falmouth’s Hannaford agreed to sort the receipts if you had written the schools name on the back and forward that money to the particular school. It was a lot of work for the store and they probably will not sort by school again, so if another promotion comes along it would be best to have your kids bring it to the school or drop it off in the office yourself.

INTRAMURAL COMMITTEE:

We now have a paid worker who comes in. There are 30 –40 kids who participate. They will be working on Volleyball, X-country skiing and snowshoeing in the coming weeks. If you want to participate in X-country skiing you need to have your own skis. Maureen McInnis is currently looking to fill her grant request and buy 25 pairs of snowshoes so they can be provided.

We are in desperate need of someone to groom the trails on a weekly basis. There is a $75 payment available. You would need a snow mobile that can attach the grader onto the back. If anyone is interested contact Cindy Talbot.

NEW BUSINESS

TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON:

We are looking for two people to chair. The following people have volunteered to help: Kathy Hedman, Carol Keroack, Maria Locke, Christine Dalzell, and Harriet Boomer. This year it will be a full luncheon on March 21. Anyone interested in helping out or chairing this wonderful event, check your calendars and contact Julie Cameron. This is a great way to tell teachers thank you for all they do for our children. This year it will be the Friday immediately following parent conferences.

BY LAWS COMMITTEE

We are looking for people to help form by-laws for the Falmouth Maine Middle School PTO. Any interested persons should contact Melissa Cott or Ro Cox-Collins. A call for volunteers will be put in the principal’s notes. The following people volunteered from this meeting: Rena Becker, Karen Farber, Harriet Boomer, Melissa Cott and Ro Cox-Collins.

The meeting was adjourned at 2pm. Next meeting Wed. Feb. 5th in the evening.

Attendees: Kathie Marquis-Girard, Deb Loveitt, Julie Richard, Carol Keroack, Theresa Getson, Nancy Richards, Russ Stockdall, Melissa Cott, Rosemary Cox-Collins, Truth Holden, Mickie Kucinkas, and Harriet Boomer

The offsite meeting began with PATHS Guidance Counselor Molly Clancy talking to us about the programs offered at Portland Arts and Technology High School. They are generally two year programs that junior and seniors will take. This allows the students to achieve graduation required classes at their home school. Classes are for a block of three hours and there are two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some of the classes offered were Dance, Music, Bio Technology, Home Health Care, Automotive, Plumbing, Brick Mason, Drafting, Welding, and of course my favorite, Food Management. In all the school offers over 24 different hands on programs to students and gives them a wonderful beginning and opportunity to attend various colleges. She concluded her talk with a tour of the facility.

Ro Cox-Collins called the meeting to order.

The October minutes will be on the web by Nov. 8

Principals Choice- Deb Loveitt gave us a short update on all class levels.
5th Grade will soon be learning to knit. They will work on squares that will be put together to make an afghan that will be donated to charity. Look for requests to come home for volunteers and supplies.

6th Grade- is gearing up for Greek Week.

7th and 5th Grades have just finished Terra Nova testing.

8th Grade a survey is going home to discuss the various trips offered to these students. Information will be given on the Washington and the Quebec trips in hopes that that it will help parents make informed choices for their children.

Deb Loveitt has been meeting with the new high school principal Allyn Hutton to make a middle school to high school assessment. They are discussing what is working and what needs some improvement to make the transition to high school a smoother one.

Treasure’s report given by Harriet Boomer:

Balance 12,563.77
Deposits from Mag. Drive 63,142.09
7th Grade Salem trip ( 870.00)
Recess equipment ( 56.17)
7th Grade Terra Nova snacks ( 148.55)
Insurance ( 376.00)
Copies ( 327.80)
Last years expense not paid ( 75.00)

Balance 73,852.34

Treasurer’s report accepted by Ro Cox-Collins and second by Melissa Cott.

Organizational Update: Ro Cox-Collins gave a report on the current condition of the PTO’s organization. Currently we are operating under a tax ID number given to us by the school. Unfortunately the school’s Business Manager, Dan O’Shea is uncomfortable with this situation. We have decided to apply for our own Tax ID number, which will require that we file an informational tax form each fiscal year. We will be setting up a set of by-laws, joining NPN (National PTO Network) at a cost of $99 a year, and leaving a paper trail of all business activities during the year for future officers. We will not, however, be incorporating ourselves, at least initially, due to costs and workload for future volunteer officers. Therefore, after much discussion, the decision was made to apply for liability insurance to bond all officers as a protective measure. Hence the Insurance charge on the treasurer’s report. In order to qualify for the insurance, double audits were made of all collections of the Magazine Drive monies and a committee will be set up by year end to audit the books at that time. Newly elected officers will start each fiscal year with freshly audited “books” and will be responsible for creating the audit committee for their own year end audit..

Committee Reports:

Intramural’s 50 kids showed up Monday for the Soccer intramural. We may have to come to general committee for some help with running these sports. There were volunteers from the 7th, 8th grades and High school. At some point we may have to speak to the school board about adding intramurals at the school level.

Playground/Recess Committee: Will be going to all 5th and 6th grade classes and asking them to do a writing prompt on what they would like to see made available. Then the committee will evaluate and make proposals based on those results.

Nutrition Committee: Members will be talking with Deb Dolley to see if there is anything we can offer new, or any way we can help with distribution. One of the big lunchtime problems for students is the lack of time to wait in the lines (food selection and payment) and still have time to eat a nutritious lunch. Therefore, any food offered must be FAST FOOD.
One other question they are looking into right now is why are the portion sizes in the drink vending machines so large? ( 20 oz bottles and the like.) Students aren’t permitted to leave the cafeteria with these bottles. Is this something we could work out with the vending companies to bring in smaller sizes so as not to encourage either waste or multiple portions in each bottle?

MEA Snacks: Mary Rand found out that another PTO went through the school lunch program and ordered things like bagels, crackers and cheese and fruits. As long as they gave them a two week notice then the school was able to order and bring it to the classrooms on carts. The nutrition committee will be looking into this for Falmouth. MEA’S will be given twice a year, once in December and once in the spring.

Magazine Drive: This year’s drive was another huge success. We exceeded our goal by almost $6000 so the school is expecting to net about $24,000 for their efforts. The turn ins were massive especially on the first and the last days. There were minor errors and some confusions that were handled quickly. Some suggestions were made to make it run smoother for next year. Maria Locke will be submitting a request to take all the volunteers out to lunch. A big hand goes out to our chairs, Maria Locke and Karen Jones and all the volunteers who put in a great number of hours to make this such a success.

New Business

Bookfair: The annual library book fair will be Nov. 15th thru the 26th this year. Harriet Boomer will be calling people to work two hour shifts during the days. Anyone interested please contact her at 878-2495 or get in touch with Peggy Becksvoort at the library. We will be open during parent conferences this year, so come look for some good buys for Christmas presents. The monies collected will be used by the library to purchase more books and needed supplies such as maps, bookcases, and magazines.

Future meetings: Our next meeting will be Dec. 4th at 7PM. Nancy Richards will give us an update on Boxtops for Schools at that time. At our Jan. meeting Peggy Becksvoort will be giving us a demo of the EBSCO service and will have a sign-up sheet for people who are interested in learning how to use the system.

Meeting adjourned 2:25PM.

The members of the committee have been doing a lot of research and have learned a lot about state and federal regulations. Deb Loveitt

Deb said that faculty and staff were very pleased with the 2002-2003 school opening. It went very smooth and the new schedule is going well. Also, very popular this year is the new salad bar and sandwich bar, which is being enjoyed by both students and faculty! The feeling is that the opening went so smoothly due in part to the 5th grade open house, which helped to reduce a lot of anxiety.

New Items

Data Management System

This is a web based central data base system. It should make life easier for everyone. The teachers can take attendance on line and send it right to the office. By this time next year they are hoping to have grades on line! We will be hearing more about this in the future.

  • Patty Sullivan is in a new support position of Literacy Aid for grades 5 & 6.
  • Math support is now being offered for grades 5 through 8.

  • 9/11 Moment of Silence. Guidance support will be available for anyone who needs it.
