During the 2007-2008 school year, Lunt School has been excitedly involved in the Let's Go! 5-2-1-0 program.
Let’s Go! Takes 5-2-1-0 to School is a component of the Let’s Go! initiative. The primary goal of the initiative is to increase physical activity and healthy eating amongst children and youth.
The school intervention uses the 5-2-1-0 mnemonic to reinforce the importance of four positive health behaviors that are recommended to increase physical activity and healthy eating. Those include:
- eating 5 fruits and vegetables per day
- limiting screen time to 2 hours per day,
- engaging in 1 hour of physical activity per day and
- increasing water consumption as well as low fat milk while limiting sugar sweetened beverages (preferably 0 sugar sweetened beverages).
Lunt received a generous grant from Let's Go! that is enabling us to implement many ongoing wellness activities with our students. These activities help increase student health and learning through increased nutrition and physical activity.
Lunt is kicking off its Let's Go! 5-2-1-0 program in March 2008. Below are some of the activities currently taking place, and that are slated for the months ahead.
5 Servings of Fruits and Vegetables a Day
During the first week in March, students were given five colored bracelets to wear on one wrist. As they eat a serving of fruits or vegetables, they move a bracelet from one wrist to the other. This provides a great visual for keeping track of their 5 fruits and vegetables a day. All Lunt staff were also given 5 bracelets to keep track of their "5 a day", and each student was given 5 extra bracelets to share with a family member. Teachers have been busy educating students about how much a "serving" size is (1 cup), as well as how 5 fruits and vegetables a day help us stay healthy, and even help us be better learners. Many students have been inspired to ask their parents for more healthy snacks. Students will be using their bracelets to keep track of their "5 a day" throughout March, and the months ahead!

One Hour of Physical Activity a Day
YoKids
YoKids is a yoga program for elementary children. Lily Goodale presented a 3-hour teacher training program that enables teachers to use yoga in the classroom on a daily basis. Yoga has been proven to provide increased attention span, self-control, motor skill performance, muscular fitness and posture for young children. Our teachers now use YoKids yoga with students in their classrooms on a regular basis. This is especially helpful on those very cold or wet days when kids are unable to go outside for physical activity. |

Winterkids
Winterkids Live is an interactive program that inspires children to be more active in the winter. Winterkids provided 4 WinterKids Active Academics Workshops to our 2nd grade students and then took them outside to snowshoe. Our PE teacher, Jenn Doe, will continue the program with snowshoes at Lunt School for the 2nd grade.

The Mileage Club
The Mileage Club is a walking program where Lunt 1st and 2nd grade students run or walk around an assigned path at recess. Cards are punched every time a student completes a lap; they receive a plastic foot for every 5 miles logged. Lunt started this program last year, continued it in the fall, and Let's Go! has provided us with grant funding that will enable us to continue the program in the spring.
