Six Pillars of Character

With the School Climate and Wellness Team's recommendation, Lunt School has chosen CHARACTER COUNTS! Six Pillars of Character for Lunt's new, school-wide character education initiative. Our hope is that the Six Pillars of Character language, traits and values will eventually become a natural part of the school's culture, and will be interwoven throughout every classroom, every special, every aspect of the child's learning experience at Lunt.

Lunt School staff and parents will encourage and foster all six of these traits throughout the school year.

Here are five of the Six Pillars, as of April 2007

Here are the Six Character traits, listed according to which trait we focused on each month at Lunt during the 2006-2007 school year:

December: Caring
Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need

Two of Lunt's school-wide Caring activities for December were:

January: Respect
Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

Two of Lunt's school-wide Respect activities for January were:

February: Trustworthiness
Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country

Hearts of Trustworthiness - Blue "Hearts of Trustworthiness" were handed out to students showing trustworthy behavior throughout the month of February. Students' names were written on the hearts, and then taped to the school's front lobby windows.

March: Fairness
Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly

Fairness Flowers - Orange "Fairness Flowers " were handed out to students who demonstrate fairness during the month of March. Examples of fairness behaviors are sharing, taking turns, following the classroom and school rules, following game rules, and including everyone. Students' names were written on the flowers, and then taped to the school's front lobby windows, alongside the Hearts of Trustworthiness.

April: Responsibility
Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for yo
ur choices

May: Citizenship
Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment
